Hybrid Grounding & Digital Grounding Device

HYBRID GROUNDING & DIGITAL GROUNDING DEVICE

SN Engineering provides Hybrid Grounding and Digital Grounding Device solutions for sensitive electrical and electronic systems, industrial plants, EPC contractors, MEP consultants, government projects, data centres, airports, railways, metro, oil & gas, telecom, hospitals and critical infrastructure projects across India.

WHAT IS HYBRID GROUNDING?

Hybrid Grounding is a combined grounding approach in which the conventional protective earthing system and a Digital Grounding Device work together.

Conventional earthing remains the basic electrical-safety system. It provides the protective earth path, fault-current path, earth electrodes, bonding and protective conductors.

The Digital Grounding Device works as a supplementary engineering solution for sensitive equipment where neutral-to-earth voltage, electrical noise, bonding, continuity and grounding-related disturbances need additional attention.

The complete Hybrid Grounding approach can include:

• Conventional Earthing System

• Digital Grounding Device

• Correct Equipotential Bonding

• Neutral-to-Earth Voltage Assessment

• Grounding Continuity Checking

• Surge Protection Coordination

• Power Quality Review

• Monitoring & Maintenance

HOW DOES HYBRID GROUNDING WORK?

1. CONVENTIONAL EARTHING

Conventional earthing provides the main protective connection between electrical equipment and earth.

Its performance depends on:

• Soil resistivity

• Soil moisture

• Electrode depth

• Electrode spacing

• Electrode material

• Backfill compound

• Seasonal variation

• Corrosion

• Earthing conductor size

• Joint quality

2. DIGITAL GROUNDING DEVICE

The Digital Grounding Device is used as an additional engineering component for sensitive electronic equipment.

It can support investigation and management of:

• Neutral-to-Earth Voltage

• Grounding Continuity

• Bonding Quality

• Grounding-Related Electrical Noise

• Leakage-Related Conditions

• UPS Grounding Conditions

• Transformer Neutral Conditions

• Generator Neutral Conditions

• Sensitive Equipment Ground Reference

• Periodic Grounding Monitoring

3. COMPLETE HYBRID GROUNDING SYSTEM

The Digital Grounding Device does not replace proper earthing.

It works together with:

• Earthing electrodes

• Protective conductors

• Earthing strips

• Equipment bonding

• Neutral system

• UPS / isolation transformer

• Surge protection

• Electrical distribution system

WHAT AFFECTS EARTHING PERFORMANCE?

EARTH & SOIL FACTORS

Earth resistance can change due to:

• Soil resistivity

• Moisture level

• Soil composition

• Temperature

• Electrode depth

• Electrode spacing

• Backfill compound

• Corrosion

• Seasonal conditions

CONDUCTOR & BONDING FACTORS

Grounding performance can also be affected by:

• Loose earthing joints

• Corroded connections

• Undersized earth conductors

• Long conductor routes

• Poor equipment bonding

• Parallel earth paths

• Broken earth continuity

• Poorly connected earthing strips

NEUTRAL & SOURCE FACTORS

Neutral-to-earth voltage may be affected by:

• Transformer neutral arrangement

• Generator neutral arrangement

• Neutral conductor impedance

• Loose neutral connection

• Shared neutral conductors

• Unbalanced electrical loads

• Source configuration

POWER QUALITY FACTORS

Sensitive equipment grounding may also be affected by:

• Harmonics

• Non-linear loads

• UPS systems

• VFDs

• SMPS loads

• Isolation transformers

• Phase imbalance

• Leakage currents

• Common-mode electrical noise

IMPORTANT TECHNICAL NOTE

Earth resistance and neutral-to-earth voltage are two different electrical parameters.

A low earth resistance value does not automatically guarantee low neutral-to-earth voltage.

Similarly, a Digital Grounding Device does not electronically reduce soil resistivity.

Poor soil conditions must still be corrected through proper conventional earthing design, electrode selection, depth, spacing, backfill and corrosion control.
