Introduction
Protection of structures and equipments against lightning has been an area of study for a long period of time, with increase in technology and maintaince of electrical and electronic equipment, the low operating voltage of that equipment and the increasing height of structures, the
necessity for better lightning protection risk evaluation and measures became a very urgent matter,That is where the IEC 62305 came into light.
What is IEC ?
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is an international standards organization[4][5] that prepares and publishes International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies – collectively known as "electrotechnology".It covers vast range of power technologies from power generation, transmission and distribution to home appliances and office equipment, semiconductors, fibre optics, batteries, solar energy, nanotechnology and marine energy as well as many others.
Before IEC 62305
Before IEC 62305, lightning protection was made based on the standard IEC 61024 – “Protection of
structures against lightning.IE 62305 was used to protect structures and its contents against direct lightning flashes, therby protecting against the injuries to living beings and structures by electric shock and physical damages.
Moving to a new approach with IEC 62305
IEC 62305 is formed by 4 parts of Protection against lightning, covering the internal and external structure and dierct and indirect effects of lightning.
IEC 62305-3 and IEC 62305-4 provided a wider range of lightning protection measures,as a result of which engineers had the tools to protect any structure but the main problem was to know which measures were the most adequate to implement in a specific structure, thereby introducing a new method-IEC 62305-2.
Thus, IEC-62305 provided the way to analyze the structure as a whole or by zones, that can turn thelightning protection process more efficient, and ultimately, cheaper to implement.
